PRESERVE Study

PRESERVE YOUR BREAST
The Preserve study: Partial breast re-irradiation using ultra hypofractionation: Phase 2 multi-institutional study
The PRESERVE clinical trial is for individuals who had had breast cancer before, with lumpectomy and radiation as the treatment, and now have a recurrence or a new breast cancer in the same breast. While most patients are cured with lumpectomy and radiation the first time, in some cases, cancer returns - either the same cancer grows back, or a new, second cancer arises in the same breast.
This recurrence has often been treated with mastectomy. Although mastectomy is an effective treatment, it can impact quality of life, cause significant physical and emotional side effects, and may be over-treatment for small, localized recurrences.
The PRESERVE trial is designed to help more women with an in-breast recurrence preserve their breast with a second lumpectomy and a targeted short course of radiation therapy, thereby avoiding mastectomy without compromising survival from this disease.
Principal Investigators
The Preserve study is led by Dr. Danielle Rodin and Dr. Anne Koch at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre.
